2. Summary

This review paper introduces the progress in membrane characterization and transport theory in historical perspective. Depending on presence or absence of pores at the top dense layer of the RO membrane, there are different transport mechanisms and models such as solution-diffusion mechanism and preferential sorption-capillary flow(PS-CF) model. This presence or absence of pores has revealed by characterization methods such as Small-Angle Neutron Scattering(SANS) and Positron annihilation spectroscopy(PALS). And the advanced transport study by molecular dynamics simulation came to conclude that there are bimodal pore size distributions, the pore sizes of which correspond to those of network and aggregate pores. As for the membrane transport, more precise information on the membrane structure and the material transport through the membrane are needed.
