Title: Estimation of the spectral diffuse attenuation coefficient of downwelling irradiance in inland and coastal waters from hyperspectral remote sensing data: Validation with experimental data (2016)

2. Summary

Arthi and Palanisamy suppose that the present semi-analytical model is better descriptor of K_d (λ) and performer in comparison with three existing models such as Kirk (1991), Gordon (1989), and Lee et al. (2005). They develop a semi-analytical model to estimate the spectral diffuse attenuation coefficient of downwelling irradiance (K_d (λ)) in inland and coastal waters. The present model is applied to two HICO (Hyperspectral Imager for the Coastal Ocean) remote sensing images. In spite of some discrepancy between HICO-derived K_d (λ) and in-situ K_d (λ) values for turbid waters, the K_d (λ) values of present model have good agreement with in-situ data and smaller errors than other models. The author’s purpose is to develop the exiting model in order to show consistently high accuracy in inland and coastal environments.

3. Application to research

I think that the present model would be helpful for monitoring the efficiency of pollution reduction efforts and evaluating underwater optical environments.
