Lunetta et al, who are specialists of remote sensing, researches cyanobacteria cell count estimation using MERIS satellite data in the paper, ‘Evaluation of cyanobacteria cell count detection derived from the MERIS imagery across the eastern USA’. Before this research, remote sensing about cyanobacteria have mainly focused on estimating concentration of the pigment in the cyanobacteria. However, instead of indirectly estimating the cyanobacteria abundance via the pigments in the cell, this paper directly estimates the abundance using the satellite images. Also, they validate their results by comparing with field data sampled in the lakes of USA. For the low concentration of cyanobacteria cells in this sample, the satellite estimates the abundance well. However, for the high concentration doesn’t perform well.
It was the first paper that posed the problem of remote sensing for cyanobacteria abundance and our team have done the research for checking why the variance of remote sensing result is high for eutrophic river. It was the good reference for our search when we started.
