2. Summary

This paper was written to improve the algae booms prediction performance by reflecting chl-a using growth-rate-related parameters of multiple algal groups.

This study conducted Algae booms prediction experiment in Han River using the EFDC model from 2013 to 2015. The model was performed with respect to water level, water temperature, and water quality variables in various locations of the

study area.

 

The following three simulation models were used in this study:

(a): same growth rate for all algae, (b): separate growth rates for each algal group, (c): different maximum growth rate per each region and algal group

 

3. Originality and Creativity

In this paper, research was conducted with different characteristics of individual growth for each scenario. At 4 positions (Q6, Q8, Q10, Q13), Scenario (a), (b) using 4 variables (TOC, TP, TN, Chl-a), and scenario(c) using 8 variables (TOC, TP, Chl-a, TN, NH4-N, NO3-N, PO4-P, DO) showed that the more specific the growth rate of the algae group, the smaller the prediction error.

Also, chl-a was less accurate downstream (Q13), suggesting that more algal groups were needed for more accurate predictions.

 

Consequently, this study only considers three phytoplankton groups (Cyano, Diatom, Green), but indicates that at least three groups of algae are needed to improve the Chl-a calibration accuracy.

 

4. Application to research

I think it would be better try to further subdivide the algae group considering the different growth rates for each algae group.
