2. Summary

Surika van Wyk et. al. designed pilot plant for supercritical water desalination (SCWD). In this paper, they explained the methods to conduct experiment for SCWD and showed experimental results. SCWD is a novel technology which uses supercritical conditions to separate water from seawater. It has an advantage for zero liquid discharge (ZLD). However, SCWD needs huge amount of energy to operate the plant. SWCD consume 450 MJth/(m3 drinking water). This value is much higher than a conventional process SWRO (30 MJel/m3) and MSF (300 MJth/m3)). Although SCWD has a potential to be a future desalination technology, due to the energy intensive nature, it is recommended to use SCWD as a post-treatment process for SWRO brine.

 - It is a first generation of pilot plant for supercritical water desalination.

 - It could be used to plan future research projects rather than to be used for current research topic.
