2. Summary

To date, global energy consumption is gradually rising. Especially, it is almost depended on fossil fuels. And this trend can cause severe climate change. So, we need to explore renewable energy resources. Among the renewable energy resources, PRO(Pressure-Retarded Osmosis) that is a type of SGE(Salinity Gradient Energy) is coming to the fore. Fresh water is transported through semi-permeable membrane to salt water and the increased salt water can operate a hydro-turbine. In this process, PRO can generate electricity. It has more potential to generate electricity. So, this thesis researches the PRO process in various ways.

In order to obtain the high power density and lower the concentration polarization(CP) that is an obstacle for effective PRO process, researchers have studied the PRO membrane types such as flat-sheet type or hollow-fiber type and the PRO process such as stand-alone processes and PRO-hybrid processes. Through the many researches, PRO is developed to lab scale and pilot scale. But we need more challenges to reach commercial stage.
