소속: 저자들은 Israe에 있는 Technion, Israel Institute of Technology 소속임. 
- David Hasson: 화학공학과 교수. 1956년에 University of London (Imperial Collage of Science and Technology)에서 박사학위를 받았고, 70년대 후반과 80년대 초반에 Technion에서 Desalination과 water technology에 대한 강의와 연구를 시작하였고, 80년대 후반에는 막분리 공정에 관련된 연구를 시작함. 전문분야로는 열전달, 막분리공정, 해수담수화공정, 그리고 수처리 기술이 있음.
- Iris Sutzkover-Gutman: 화학공학과 졸업생으로 2005년부터 박사과정을 시작하였고, 2010년에 학위를 수여받았음. 연구주제는 “Performance Improvement of Polymeric Membranes”임. (지도교수는 Prof. Semiat Raphael) 

2) Summary of Paper

해수담수화공정의 capital cost에서 10~20%의 비중을 차지하고 있는 전처리 공정에 대해 다루고 있으며, 유입원수의 수질에 따른 고려인자들과 단위공정들을 설명하고 있은 리뷰 논문임.

i) Foulant 분류
-Scaling: Precipitation of soluble inorganic salts.
It occurred when the ionic product of the scaling salt exceeds its solubility product, e.g.
.
-Particulate fouling: Contamination with suspended and colloidal particles.
Monitored by measurements of SDI, water turbidity and particle counts.
-Biological fouling: Formation of a primary organic conditioning film, 
Colonizing bacteria attachment, 
Formation of a biopolymer matrix and 
Establishment of a mature secondary biofilm
-Organic fouling: Dissolved organics mainly originated from decomposition of humic substances

-Chemical treatment: Dosage of coagulant and anti-scalant, acid control, and dissolved gas removal

3) Originality & Creativity
해수담수화의 전처리 공정에 대한 전반적인 리뷰가 제시되어 있음. 구체적이거나 특정 공정에 대해 심도있게 다루지는 않았지만, 이 논문을 통해 오염인자들을 파악하고 다른 문헌들을 통해 전체 공정에 대한 이해를 해야할 필요가 있음.

4) Contribution to ESEL
해수담수화 연구그룹(ESEL내)의 중점적인 연구는 RO공정을 위주로 진행되어 왔으나 전체공정에 대한 이해를 높여야 한다고 판단됨. 원수 수질에 따른 전처리 공정의 선택은 현재 진행되고 있는 과제 수행을 위해서도 전반적인 이해가 요구됨.
