2. Summary
SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool)
Its objective is to predict the long-term impact of rural and agricultural management practices on water, sediment and agricultural chemical yields, and so on.
* Features
- Calculating the parameters that impact the quality of stream water
- Tracking water transportation
- Analyzing some calibration and uncertainty
- Evaluating the effects of different kinds of watershed management measures
- Investigating the influence of PS and NPS.
* Limitations
1) Difficulties of simulating the daily situation
2) Difficulties in managing too many data
3) Impossibility to treat the special event (e.g. flood, sediment routing, and snowmelt erosion)
HSPF (Hydrological Simulation Program-FORTRAN)
It represents contributions of sediment, nutrients, pesticides, conservatives, and fecal coliforms, and simulate water quality and quantity process.
* Features
- Simulating the water quality elements.
- Developing an index-based robust decision-making framework for dealing with water quantity and quality issues.
- Predicting the impact of PS and NPS.
* Limitations
1) Physical process based on the empirical relationship, not a mechanism
2) Susceptible model accuracy
3) Limitation to well-mixed rivers and reservoirs
4) Too many data needs
EFDC (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code)
It is a versatile surface water modeling system, which includes hydrodynamics, sediment transport, toxic contaminant transport, and water quality eutrophication components.
* Features
- Predicting algae growth and simulate eutrophication
- Modeling the calibration and verification against water level variation.
- Modeling the analysis of the salinity intrusion characteristics in the downstream sector.
To overcome the weakness of each model, there are some measurements.
1) Combination of the model with other models
2) Combination of the model with the AI model
3) System integration
