2. Summary

Teuvo Kohonen summarized general information about self-organizing map (SOM) as an inventor of it. In this paper, author explained how research in the field of artificial intelligence used main idea of brain science. And then general information, algorithms, and applications of SOM were explained. There are two freeware packages developed by his research group. The first one is the SOM_PAK and the second one is SOM Toolbox. SOM_PAK is targeting UNIX operating system. SOM Toolbox is targeting any operating system. SOM Toolbox is made using MATLAB. Although SOM algorithm is originally developed to explain the abstract feature maps found in biological central nervous systems, nowadays, it is widely use as a machine learning algorithm.

 

3. Originality & Creativity

 - Teuvo Kohonen developed SOM algorithms and built packages of SOM.

 

4. Application to research

 - As an unsupervised learning algorithm, SOM can be used to develop fault diagnosis and isolation algorithm.
