2.Summary
Salinity-gradient power is in the limelight. It generates the clean energy from mixing water streams with different salt concentrations. There are two big parts in salinity-gradient power energy generation. One is pressure-retarded osmosis (PRO). It the PRO process, the chemical potential transfers to hydraulic energy, then operate the generator. PRO process is efficient in the high salinity-gradient gap condition. The other generation method is reverse electrodialysis (RED). In this system, cation and anion makes electric potential difference on the stacked exchange membranes.
3. Application to research
The basic concept of PRO and RED is very similar. However, PRO have to undergo one more energy transfer process, which makes electricity with hydraulic energy. In the thermodynamics view, it has loss of energy by the resistance. RED process can generate the electricity without specific process. The membrane, which contains the high power density of PRO process and small resistance loss of RED process, can make sustainable and high efficiency electricity generation.
